Overview:

      Negombo, western port of Sri Lanka. Located on the North Bank of the lagoon, 30 km north of Colombo. Population 61000 (1981). It produces rice, coconut and cinnamon. Handicrafts include pottery making, bronze ware making and leather making. Important fishing ports. It is rich in prawns and crabs. There are remnants of 17th century Dutch buildings.
      Negombo is very close to Sri Lanka International Airport, which is only 7km away, while the airport is 30km away from Colombo. Therefore, many tourists who come to Sri Lanka like to have a rest here for a day or two after getting off the plane or before leaving.
