Overview:

The Manzanillo International Terminal began operations on April 16, 1995. It is near the Atlantic entrance of the Panama Canal and next to the Colon Free Zone (CFZ). The project area, known as South Coco Solo, was restored to Panama under the 1977 Panama Canal Treaty and the former US naval air base during World War II.

After returning to Panama, the area was used as a vehicle storage and distribution center in Latin America. In the following years, it was decided to establish a ro-ro (roll-on/roll-off) berth to facilitate the import from the yard and the re-export of cars.

In August 1993, the loading and unloading service of multinational companies with the United States arrived (SSA Shipping now) to Panama, and the original concept of ro-ro berth became a container transshipment terminal. This is today, with more than 1,600 meters of shore gantry cranes equipped with modern management systems . The total cost of the project, so far, totals more than 65 billion U.S. dollars.
