Overview:

      It is located in the southwest of Ghana and is the capital of the western region. It is 6.5km northeast of Takoradi port. The population is about 161000. It was built in the 17th century. In 1901, the city was built because of the construction of the railway leading to the inland mining area. Before the opening of Takoradi port in 1928, it was an important port. It is now a commercial center with a strong trade in cocoa, timber and grain. There are sawing, pressing oil (palm oil), cement, cigarette, textile and other industries. The old port area is used for fishing and sightseeing, and a naval base is set up.
