Overview:
The Port of Vado Ligure is located in the province of Savona and is managed and operated by the Savona Port Authority.
Port coordinates: 44o 16' 9'N, 8o 26' 16' E
The plan to build a multi-purpose platform in the port of Vado Ligure combines the integration of public institutions and private operators in port expansion and port traffic development.
This work will be achieved through project financing, with an investment of 450 million euros (300 designated by the state, 150 job promoters, that is, a group of companies formed by the Malaysian Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Organization, Grandi Lavori Fincosit and Technital).
The platform will extend 210,000 square meters and will provide a 700-meter-long straight line terminal and two high-deep berth container terminals : one at the root of the terminal (depth: 15,00 meters) and the other at the head (depth: 20 ,00 meters).
The natural deep water (the characteristics of the Savona-Vado port, if compared with other ports) will allow even a generation of container ships with a capacity of more than 12,000 TEU to be safely anchored.
The expected traffic volume can reach between 720,000 and 4.8 million TEU per year, which will enable the port of Savona-Vado to exceed the threshold of one million TEU.
Once unloaded, the goods must be effectively handled: for this, a dedicated road system and a new toll station will be implemented. However, the most important challenge is rail transportation: due to the rail shuttle service designed by the Port Authority, 40% of the containers handled by the new terminal will be transshipped from the port.
It is scheduled to start operations in the spring of 2018.
