Overview:
A city of southern Quebec, Canada, a river port. Located between Montreal and Quebec, North Bank of St. Lawrence and confluence of St. Maris river. It is named after the San Maris River, which is divided into three outlets by the island.
In 1634, the French began to set up fur trade points. It was built in 1857. The population is about 50000 (1981), 98% of whom speak French. Water resources are abundant. The paper industry is developed, and it is a world famous newsprint production center. The rest are textiles, clothing, electrical equipment, shoes and so on. There are seagoing ships berthing at the wharf, and there are granaries with loaders.
