Overview:

      The largest port in southern Turkey, the capital of Ichel province. The population is 216 000 (1980). Located at the westernmost end of Adana plain, the port is excellent. It is the export port of agricultural products (grains, beans, oranges, etc.) in Adana plain and mineral products (chromium, copper) in southeast Turkey. There are textile, food, phosphate fertilizer, glass and other factories, as well as refineries with an annual refining capacity of 4.5 million tons. Crude oil comes from Batman oilfield and other countries in the Middle East.
